Lauren Flanigan is one of the stars of the opera world, and I’m fortunate to say for 14 years one of my students. She has become so recognized as a singer that composer Philip Glass wrote a symphony for her. Lauren premiered the work in Germany with the Linz Philharmonic with Rodney Russell Bennett conducting; and just recently she performed the New York premier of the work with the same orchestra. The piece is both beautiful and exciting and Lauren sang like a dream—55 minutes of constant singing. The composition hovered around high G and high C with many big dramatic moments. Lauren sang with such ease and beauty that I really could not believe it. For the premier and recording of this work, she said she was tired and did not feel great about the singing. But not here; the performance was fantastic! When it was over, I went backstage to meet and congratulate Lauren. She grabbed me by one hand and introduced me to everyone as “my teacher, the person who gave me my head voice which allowed me to sing this piece tonight.” It is amazing what a difference singing can make with the use of the head voice—effortless production, excellent resonance, and that rich velvety texture. The power of the head voice is superior to any other way of singing.
